How to Read Baseball Odds
To learn how to read baseball odds (decimal, American-style moneyline or British fractional), have a play with our baseball betting calculator below:
Popular Types of Baseball Bets
How does baseball betting work? We’ve picked out some of the most popular and best types of baseball bets to place on games and leagues below:
The moneyline
How does the baseball moneyline work? It is the simplest way to bet on a game of baseball. All you do is choose which side you think you will win. Moneyline odds are displayed as follows:
The favourite will have the lower decimal figure, or will be a number preceded by a minus if you use American odds. So, for odds of 1.63 (-160), you have to bet C$160 to win C$100.
The underdog will have the higher decimal figure, or will be a number preceded by a plus. For odds of 3.60 (+260), you will win C$260 from a C$100 bet.
Total runs – over/under
How many runs will the teams get between them? In most Major League Baseball games, the sportsbook will set a number somewhere between six and nine.
If you think it will be more than this, you go over. However, if you reckon this will be a low-scoring affair, you go under.
This is an incredibly popular way of betting. It’s worth being aware most fans want to see an exciting game and back the overs accordingly. So, there is sometimes good value in the unders.
Run line bets
A popular question is: what does the run line mean in baseball betting? Think of it as the same as point spread or handicap betting in other sports, except it is always set at 1.5 runs (-1.5 for the favourite or +1.5 for the underdog).
When you bet on the run line, you give the other team 1.5 extra points to even out the betting. So, for example if you think Toronto Blue Jays will win by two or more at -1.5, then this is the bet for you.
Prop bets
Proposition bets are a wide range of markets on various elements of baseball games based on player and team statistics.
You can bet on how many hits a batter will have, or how many strike-outs a pitcher will achieve.
There’s even an R+H+E bet, where you can go over or under on the total of runs, hits and errors in a game.
Grand Salami
Many sportsbooks offer a grand salami wager. Bettors can predict whether the combined number of runs in all the games played on one day will be over or under a number set by the sportsbook.
Outright win
If you believe a team will win their division, or even the World Series, you’ll be able to bet on them. The closer to the start of the season you do this, the more generous your odds will be.
Parlay betting
Also known as an accumulator or acca, baseball parlay betting allows you to bet on the outcome of more than one game in the same bet and your odds are multiplied. But all your selections must win in order to win the bet.
Main Baseball Leagues to Bet on
-
Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball
MLB is the peak of world baseball, with a history dating back to the 19th century. There are 30 teams, 29 in the United States and one, the Toronto Blue Jays, in Canada.
Half are in the National League, the other 15 in the American League. After a 162-game regular season, five in each league advance to a post-season tournament that culminates in the best-of-11 World Series.
-
Nippon Professional Baseball
Nippon Professional Baseball
Baseball has long been hugely popular in Japan, and its league now ranks as high as any outside the MLB.
There are two leagues, with six teams in each. They play 146 games in a regular season, with the best from each league facing off in the Nippon Series.
-
Latin American Leagues
Latin American Leagues
Several countries, including Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela, host leagues with an excellent standard of baseball.
In many places, the leagues are played in winter, during the MLB off-season, meaning bettors can take an interest in baseball for 12 months of the year.
